Kybella: The Solution for Double Chin

Contrary to what many believe, you don’t have to be overweight to get a double chin. More often than not, genetics are to blame. We all have this potential pouch under our chin that starts to accumulate over time based on our genetics, so it’s really a weight-independent pocket of fat that’s predetermined before we’re born. And though it may not be your fault, that doesn’t change the fact that you don’t find it to be the most flattering characteristic when you look in the mirror.
Luckily, there are many ways to get rid of a double chin, with one very effective method being an injectable treatment called Kybella. But before you schedule your appointment, let me fill you on a few things you should know.
Kybella: The first and only injectable double chin treatment
Kybella is an injectable made up of deoxycholic acid that kills fat cells under the chin. It’s administered as a series of treatments, producing gradual results. Different physicians go about the injections in various ways so understanding their routine prior to treatment is particularly important when choosing a Kybella-trained dermatologist.
What You Need to Know About Kybella Injections
While some physicians just do topical numbing, I’ve found that the burning afterward is just not worth it. I think the thought here is that the fewer times you stick somebody with a needle, the less risk you have for bruising. But in my opinion, people can cover up bruising. My goal is to make my patients as comfortable as possible both before and after the treatment.
This is why I prefer to numb the area with lidocaine injections. Even though this means we’re doubling the number of injections that the patient has to have, this also means that the patient isn’t going to experience intense burning two hours after the injections.
Kybella Treatments and Results
For the majority of my patients, I recommend three treatments spaced six weeks apart. Then, two months after the last treatment is when they’re going to see the final results, so it’s a six-month process.
There’s going to be some swelling for a few days afterward, and the area can also stay numb for a while. Even after the swelling is gone, the area might feel like it’s swollen in-between treatments just because it’s numb. However, that sensation will eventually return.

Kybella is perfect for those with mild to moderate localized adiposity, though, if you’re very overweight and have too much fat underneath the chin then you might be more of a CoolSculpting patient.
