How does Botox work?
Botox is an injectible drug derived from the neuromodulator Botulinum toxin type A, produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Other brand names include Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau. The botulinum toxin inhibits the synaptic release of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter stopping muscle contractions that cause wrinkles.
In clinical trials, adults who received botulinum toxin injections saw improvement in the appearance of:
- Crow’s feet lines
- Frown lines and severe forehead lines
