Erasing Mistakes – Tattoo Removal

Browse by

Lifestyle, opinions, social circles, and career choices change. We mature and evolve with the passage of time. In short, you are really not the same person you were in the distant past – or even the recent past – yet you have to live with the consequences of decisions made by that person. We have all made choices throughout life which we now regret. Is this how you feel about your tattoo? Fortunately, that is one decision you can reverse with laser tattoo removal. Birmingham and Chelsea, AL area residents can take advantage of this option at the Skin Wellness Dermatology of Alabama.

Options for Tattoo Removal

A tattoo is permanent ink injected into the dermis layer (beneath the surface) of your skin. This makes removal difficult. You have probably seen over the counter tattoo removal creams. These products are topical, meaning that they contact the epidermis (surface) layer of the skin. They might lighten a tattoo slightly, but there is no evidence to suggest that these creams are effective at all. Additionally, they can cause significant skin irritation.

Effective tattoo removal needs to reach the dermis, where the ink is. This can be accomplished through dermabrasion, or laser treatment. Dermabrasion tattoo removal is not to be confused with the more gentle, rejuvenating microdermabrasion. This method of removing tattoos involves sanding down the skin, using a rotary device, to expose the ink.

Laser tattoo removal is the safe, effective, non-invasive method. Laser energy can safely penetrate the skin’s surface. Therefore, it reaches the ink without any skin tissue being removed. Various wavelengths of laser light interact differently with specific colors. At the Skin Wellness Dermatology of Alabama, we use the latest Q-switch laser technology, with four wavelengths to target all of the colors in a tattoo effectively. The laser causes the ink to deteriorate, and be carried away by the bloodstream. Several sessions may be required for optimal results.
